Alright friends, this is going to require some audience participation. I know that many (hundreds and hundreds) of you read The Beholder and don’t comment, and that’s totally fine. I do the same thing. But today you’ll need to come out of hiding, for today marks the launch of…
(drumroll)
dadadadadadadadadadadadadada (this is the sound of the drumroll) dadadadadadadadadadadadadadada…………………..
The Beholder Playlist Project!!!
Oh, the title of this post already says that. I guess that was anticlimactic, huh. Anyway as I was on my run today, I realized that I was SICK of my workout playlist. The songs just don’t give me the oomph I need to get through a tough workout…and not because they’re bad songs; I’m just too used to them now.

So here’s where you come in: Leave a comment on this post telling me your favorite workout song. You don’t have to say anything else; it can just be the song title (so for those of you who read but don’t usually comment, you don’t have to make any pleasantries. This is as low-pressure as you can imagine). Try to limit yourself to a single song, because I want these tunes to be the cream of the crop.
Don’t work out to music? That’s okay too. Just tell me the one song that never fails to make you want to get up and dance. I’m going to take all of these songs and create an iMix on iTunes that you’ll be able to purchase if you like.
And you’ll be rewarded for your effort!
Just for taking the time to leave your song in the comments of this post, you’ll be entered to win a gift certificate to iTunes that is equal to the value of The Beholder’s iMix (so if there are 60 songs on the list, your gift certificate will be worth $59.40). I’ll do the random drawing this Sunday, April 19th, at noon Central Time. Any comments received before then will be eligible to win!
So, to reiterate: leave your favorite workout song in a comment on this post. Even if you’ve never commented before. I know you’re out there (LINDSEY BONFIGLIO AND STEVE POLUCHA). And then you’ll have a chance to win a gift certificate from iTunes! Woo-hoo! Let the gaaaaames beginnnnnn!
To kick you off, here are the highlights from my workout playlist (although these won’t be on the iMix unless someone puts one of them in the comments):
- SOS by Rihanna
- Don’t Phunk With My Heart by the Black Eyed Peas
- If U Seek Amy by Britney Spears
- Renegade by Styx
- Great Hosannah by Kula Shaker
- I Kissed a Girl by Katy Perry
Your turn!

“When I Grow Up” by the Pussycat Dolls. I don’t workout to music, but this song makes me want to shake my moneymaker. And I don’t even know what a “moneymaker” is.

Yes, I am one of those readers lurking around, thinking that for some reason my little wanderings don’t register on modern technology, but I guess I have been found out. What can I say? I was hooked once I read about your nightly nose pore staring sessions…Which makes me sound like a total weirdo, but also makes me think about how amazing it is that you can write about staring at pores without sounding like a complete freak. Talent, I tell you.
Now, I have had a terrible time finding songs, let alone organizing them into cohesive playlists. I have the most unorganized iPod around. That said, you must, and I mean MUST, check out djearworm.com. The best mashups, EVER, which are perfect for those of us who have trouble deciding what song to listen to.

Randomly “Konstantine” by Something Corporate came on when I was just shuffling on a run and it really was great. The underlying piano in the background keeps the tempo up and its like 10 mins long so the time melts away.
Great idea btw.

“Stand” by R.E.M. We memorized the dance when you were about 5. Plus it’s kind of a bonus workout if you do the dance. How can you NOT do the dance?

Random lurker here! I know you said I didn’t have to make pleasantries, but I love the blog…
My favorite songs to run to:
Stronger, Kanye West (cliche)
Stronger, Britney Spears (cliche)
And, remember the MTV show 2ge+her? Well, they have some hilarious songs that flash me straight back to late middle school. I love to look at the Billboard charts from my middle school and high school years and download the cheesy pop hits that would have been embarrassing to claim as favorites back in the day, but are completely acceptable to love now.

I loooove listening to middle school songs! My favorite is that song “I Wish” that goes, “I wish I was a little bit taller, I wish I was a baller, I wish I had a girl who looked good I would call her…”

Poker Face – Lady Gaga. It’s her new-ish song, so it will probably be overplayed on the radio in no time at all, but it has a good beat for running.

One song? Too hard! Nay – Impossible…
So I give you two:

Oooh – what a great idea! I love song swapping.
This is REALLY hard to narrow it down to one. It changes about every month or so….but right now? It would probably have to be “Teardrop” by Massive Attack. Do you watch “House”? It is the theme song. And the fact that I am STRANGELY infatuated with Huge Laurie makes me a tiny excited when I hear this song.
April 15, 2009 at 5:21 pm
Wiggs
Love it. I feel the same way when I listen to songs by Adam Lambert.
I don’t watch House, for some reason. Every time it’s on, I love it, but…I’ve never stuck with it. Probably because it takes brainpower to watch, and I only like shows that kill my brain cells (like America’s Next Top Model).

mmk, i confess: i read your blog everyday, like literally, everyday. and i have never commented. creepy? i think not…
so, i was going to say Lady GaGa’s Just Dance and Poker Face, but they were already said. then i was gonna say When I Grow Up (Pussycat Dolls, duh) but that, too, was already said.
sooo, da dada daaaa: Right Round by Flo Rida—it’s amazingly motivating!
also Paper Planes and Bucky Done Gun by MIA, anything by Cascada, Damaged by Danity Kane, Hot N’ Cold by Katy Perry, Are You Gonna Be My Girl by JET…shit, was that more than one?? my bad…oh, and Human by the Killers (ahh! stop it!! sorry, no more, promise)

I heartily approve of your drumroll, sista! And don’t worry, there are TONS of blogs that I read every day and don’t comment on. Sometimes I just don’t have anything to say. (Yeah, right – I LOVE the sound of my own voice.)

Now, I’m a huge fan of the epic running songs – but I’m going to take the Talib Kweli song because I think it will fit with this amazing playlist that I’m compiling. True story: we saw the Kings of Leon at Bumbershoot two years ago and got to go backstage and meet them!!! It was awesome. I was drunk.

I cracked up for days when I saw their pictures/read about them inside the album cover. They are Christian hipsters from the south and I bet I would hate them if I ever spent any time with them. But I dig their music

literally anything by Girl Talk. ANYTHING. It is AMAZING for working out. Especially the new album, “Feed the Animals,” but “Night Ripper” is great too. You will be pleased.

Wait, are they the electronic/jazz band? Stupid iTunes only has one album called “It Feels Like This.” What’s the best song on there?
April 16, 2009 at 2:14 pm
Beth
This project has prompted my first blog comment ever, and I’ve been lurking for ages. It’s got to be “Give It to Me” – Timbaland with Justin Timberlake and Nelly Furtado. I just have to hear the first few beats of it, and my running pace speeds up. In fact, I run with Nike+, and this is my Powersong (the Powersong was a big decision for me – it was between this and “One Moment in Time” by Whitney Houston. I know, crazy cheesy. Does anyone else remember this gem from the ‘88 Olympics? Long before the days of the iPod, I used to sing it to myself in my head as I ran in middle school cross country races. But I digress…) I have to say I’m a little surprised JT hasn’t made more appearances on this list. He’s a must have on my running playlists.
April 16, 2009 at 2:21 pm
Wiggs
Yeah, I love JT too…I have SexyBack on my current playlist, but I gotta say, sometimes I skip it. Maybe because it’s too repetetive? I do love Give It To Me, though – and it’s NOT on my list. You know what is, though? That one Timbaland song that goes “WIPE that smi-iile off your fuckin’ FAAACE! (woooaahhhh)” I’m too lazy to move my mouse up to the Google search bar and look up the title or the artist it features. Maybe someday. Maybe…someday.

Lose Yourself by Eminem is a running must! Can’t say I like him outside of running – but the beat in that song rocks!
Work That by Mary J. Blige – good beat, great attitude to help me power through a run!
Very fun contest!
April 16, 2009 at 5:40 pm
Paige
I ABSOLUTELY second Sarah’s comment. But, unfortunately, you can’t get his albums on iTunes. I bought both of the ones I have (“Feed the Animals” and “Night Ripper”) through Girltalk’s website directly. “Feed the Animals” is one of those where you “pay what you think it’s worth,” so that’s nice and economical
April 16, 2009 at 6:04 pm
Wiggs
Smart! Good for Girltalk. I gotta be honest, I was a little teensy bit confused by the Girltalk on iTunes, because it’s this weird electronic/jazz stuff. But I was willing to try it, because some of my songs are totally weird until you listen to them while you’re running.
April 16, 2009 at 5:41 pm
Molly
I vote for the JT/Timbaland song to which you are referring, Wiggs. One and Only with Fall Out Boy.
April 16, 2009 at 5:42 pm
Betsy
I have a “unique” (aka extremely weird) taste in work out music, so I will give you my normal suggestions followed by the weirdness I love:
M.I.A.’s “Bamboo Banga” or anything else on Kala
JT’s “Senorita” and “Rock Your Body”
Flo-Rida’s “Low”
Chris “horrible person” Brown’s “Run It”
Now for the songs that are a bit… different…
Tenacious D – “Beelezeboss”, “Master Exploder”, “Break In-City”, “The Metal”
From the Lonely Island’s Incredibad Album (and SNL) – “I’m On A Boat”, “Boombox”, “Space Olympics”
The Darkness – “Black Shuck”, “Dinner Lady Arms”, “Hazel Eyes”, “One Way Ticket”
DragonForce – “Through the Fire and the Flames”

Back In Your Head – Tegan and Sara
Steady As She Goes – The Raconteurs
I’ve also been enjoying a few songs from the new Animal Collective album (Merriweather Post Pavilion). Brother Sport has helped me push myself “a little further” on several occasions. I tell myself, “I’ll just run until the song is over” but — it sounds like it’s about to end about 4 times before it actually does!
Finally, since you mentioned listening to songs from middle school, I wanted to list a couple of throwbacks that I recently added to my running playlist.
Another Night -Real McCoy
Push It -Salt ‘n Pepa
100% Pure Love -Crystal Waters

It was really difficult for me to decide on one song but i think:
“Island” – The Starting Line- is a really fun song to run to
and i have to add
“Don’t want to stop”- Good Charlotte- is a good song for when you are dying and need motivation, i just keep repeating it to myself (don’t wanna stop, don’t wanna stop LOL)
Also ditto on lots of the aforementioned songs.
Meghan C. – I forgot about 2ge+her, I LOVED them, I wonder if I still have there CDs somewhere.

Really random but the song that totally motivates me to get out the door or pick up the pace is “One” from A Chorus Line….once I hear it I just want to move…ugh, now it is in my head….”one singlular sensation, every little step she takes….”

um, “mmmbop” by hanson, obviously.
“sweet home alabama” by lynyrd skynyrd.
i’m usually listening to mellow music when i’m doing yoga, but when i need to crank out some push ups it’s a struggle to find something upbeat. those songs have been my “feel good” tunes since middle school, and i can imagine they’d still have the same effect.
